For the last billion years, mushrooms gave shape to all life on earth.
From the trillions of spores we breathe every day to the seven in ten plants whose nutrition is made possible only by mushrooms' brain-like root system, mycelium, just underfoot.
Five years ago our team, Bay Staters for Creative Well-Being, decriminalized mushrooms (the magic kind) in the first city east of the Mississippi. From this spark, our organization carried the flame of change to seven additional communities across Massachusetts, Portland Maine, and Berkeley California. Let's celebrate how our community made history for healing by celebrating all things mushrooms, including the non-psychedelic ones that just taste good too.
At this complimentary community event, we will learn the foundational role fungi has played in creating terrestrial life, its magnificent role in earth's water and soil system, its impact on the formation of human culture, and its applications to modern challenges like construction and neurological disease.
Beginning at 2pm, our attendees will be welcomed to mix and mingle with fellow mushroom fans of all ages, experiences, and backgrounds over healthful, tasty refreshments. From 2:30 to 3:30, our founder will give a collaborative presentation on the fascinating world of fungi.
At about 3:30, attendees are welcome to continue conversations with new friends and/or join a mini-presentation on how to grow mushrooms of all kinds, using imply and easy to use grow kits that are available to take home (donations welcome!). For those interested in plant medicines, our volunteer Stuart will also present on a trial he is launching to study Salvia Divinorum, a plant used by centuries of mazatec curanderos (healers).
Bring a friend or two and please reserve your spot here to let us know you're joining and to receive calendar reminders about the event and other local ones you may be interested in joining.
Optional donations are welcome for original art, stickers, grow kits, spores, and good will for our mentorship programs for people in need.
The event is at 191 Highland Street, Somerville, MA in Room B6. The building typically has ample parking in the back and the street (generally free on Sundays). When you arrive, please follow the signs. You will go downstairs, then down a long hallway, then turn right.
Drop in at anytime and leave anytime. We ask that people do not arrive before the event start at 1:50pm because we will be setting up for the event start at 2pm, which requires focus :)
